If your tooth or teeth are hot, cold, or chewing sensitive you can be at the early stages of tooth decay and may need a tooth removed or extracted. If you have any of these symptoms it is best to call and schedule an appointment with the highly trained dental team at Iliff Family Dental. We pride ourself in treating patients as if they are family and giving them the care they deserve.
As much as we love saving teeth, there comes a time when some teeth can not be saved with dental treatments. Dr. Christopher Henes and his team are highly experienced and trained in oral surgery procedures that can be completed in-office
Our expert for teeth removal in Aurora, CO may recommend removal of one or more teeth, depending on the results from a detailed exam.
First, our dentist will examine your teeth and take X-rays to better understand the position of the roots and other structures. This will help us create a treatment plan that addresses your needs properly. We will use anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the tooth extraction process.
Anesthesia options typically include local anesthesia along with the use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Nitrous oxide will help you take the edge off and help with any anxiety you might be having prior to the procedure. The local anesthetic is injected before the extraction begins and numbs the treatment area. Prior to beginning, your lip, tongue, and cheek should feel fat and puffy. Don’t worry even though they feel fat and puffy they really aren’t fat and puffy. During the procedure you shouldn’t feel anything sharp but just some pressure.
Nitrous oxide can be used with local anesthesia. The nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen, and you’ll breathe it in through a nose hood that covers your nose. This gas will calm and relax you almost immediately, and you’ll feel pleasantly drowsy while remaining awake and aware.
There are two types of tooth extractions: simple tooth extraction & surgical tooth extraction.
Surgical tooth extraction is used when there is not enough tooth structure above the gums. This procedure can be used when your tooth has a large cavity, broken below the gums, or for wisdom tooth extraction. The main difference between simple and surgical extraction is that bone is removed to aid in removing the tooth. By removing the bone this allows for the dentist to remove the tooth effectively and efficiently. The procedure is began by making sure you are completely comfortable and the completely numb. During the procedure you shouldn’t feel anything sharp but you will feel pressure. Because the tooth is broken down we use a handpiece to aid in removing the tooth. After the procedure a small resorbable sponge will be placed in the socket to help retain the blood clot, which aids in the healing process. The use of a suture might be used depending on the area of where the tooth was. Dr. Christopher Henes and his team will go over the entire procedure as well to make sure you are completely informed prior to beginning.
Once the teeth have been removed, sutures may be placed to aid in the healing process. The sutures aid in closing and protecting the extraction site. You’ll be given gauze to bite down on: This controls bleeding. Think of the gauze as a band-aid for your mouth. You might need to rest in a recovery area for a bit before you can go home. We’ll make sure you have all necessary post-surgical instructions so that you can heal without complication. Some soreness is normal, but we’ll make sure you have everything you need to stay comfortable during your recovery.
Most people are feeling back to normal within a few days. You will need to take it easy for a while until the extraction sites are fully healed. You’ll also need to practice excellent dental hygiene to reduce the risk of infection.
