Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic teeth and gums you can remove. If you have missing teeth, dentures restore your bite, chewing abilities, and may improve your self-confidence. They can replace all the teeth in your mouth or just some of them. Dentures are also custom-made, so they look and feel similar to your natural teeth.

What are the different types of dentures?

Iliff Family Dental offers multiple types of dentures, including:

Complete dentures

Complete dentures replace all your teeth. These appliances include artificial teeth attached to a pink acrylic base that mimics your natural gums. Complete dentures also suction to the roof of your mouth for additional security, preventing them from moving out of place.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures only replace some of your teeth. If you still have a fair number of healthy teeth left, partial dentures can fill in the gaps. Like complete dentures, these partial appliances attach to an artificial gum base. However, they don’t cover the root of your mouth. Instead, a metal or ceramic framework fits over your healthy teeth to anchor your partial dentures.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures attach to dental implants. These are tooth root replacements that the team surgically inserts into your jawbone. By replacing your natural roots, dental implants hold your dentures firmly in place.

What can I expect from dentures?

The Iliff Family Dental team uses state-of-the-art technology to design your individualized treatment plan and create your impressions. After using digital X-rays to design your plan, the team uses a special substance called alginate to make a mold of your mouth.

This mold fits your upper and lower arches to demonstrate how your permanent dentures may look and feel. They also take measurements of your mouth for the best fit possible.

This initial mold and measurements allow the team to create an initial wax model of your dentures. They use the wax model to make any necessary adjustments before fabricating your permanent dentures. At your final appointment, the team shows you how to wear your dentures and teaches you the best practices for care and cleaning.
